Modified polyphenylene ethers (PPE) – also known as polyphenylene oxides (PPO) – are amorphous thermoplastics with interesting properties. They can be classified in the middle line between engineering and high performance plastics. Pure PPE is practically not used. However, PPE and PS compounds, which are more resistant to oxidation, are of economic importance. In addition to very good chemical resistance, this dimensionally stable plastic is also interesting due to its temperature resistance.
PPE is the ideal material for all applications with heat resistance up to +110°C and good impact resistance over a wide temperature range. PPE has very little moisture absorption and is therefore not affected by prolonged or repeated exposure to water. Due to its resistance to hydrolysis, this material is also used in cases where it comes into direct contact with boiling water.
PPE (polyphenylene ether) plastic is a material with excellent dimensional stability, low tendency to creep and high impact strength. PPE plastics can be used in a wide range of applications and are available with additives for specialized industrial applications such as aerospace.
